Instructions for using our web browser interface.
Here is a brief outline of how to use the web browser interface.
There is
a link in the members area of the web site,
http://www.alibis.com/members/index.htm that
says "web browser
interface ....." if you click on that you will be taken to a page that
asks for your user name and password to login to the web
browser interface.
Once you are logged in an intro page will come up. At the top of the page you
will see a search box. That search box can help you find
newsgroups/discussion groups to view or subscribe to. Don't worry,
subscribing to a newsgroup doesn't cost any
money, just means that you want
to regularly participate or view the posts in that newsgroup. Use the search box
by typing in a word that is key to the
subject matter you are looking for
newsgroups about. If you want groups that discuss "trains" type in trains
in the box and search. It will bring up a list
of all the newsgroups we have
that have the word trains in the title. If you want to see a list of all the
groups with pictures, type in pictures, for adult
type pictures type in
erotica , for blondes type in blondes, for MAC software type in "mac" etc,
and so on.
You will then get the page with a list of appropriate newsgroups
that fit your search criteria. Look for
ones that are active groups, those
will be ones wiht lots of messages in them. The number of messages available in
a group is shown to the right of the
group name. A group with 0 or
just a handful of messages is probably not an active group at this time, some
groups can have many thousands of
messages. Click on the group name of
a group you want to view the message headers from, and the first page of message
headers will come up.
Once you see a list of messages click on the message
subject to read or view that particular post.
At the bottom of the page you will find some buttons. Click on the "previous"
button to view more messages. The interface starts with the most
recent
messages so you need to click on previous to go to older messages. Keep clicking
on previous button to view older and older messages.
Each click will bring
up the next page of 30 or so message headers.
Please not that the web browser interface will not work with Yencoded
multipart posts at this time. We are working on the software upgrade
that
will handle multipart Yenc posts at this time. The interface will decode single
part Yenc posts however like .jpg'.s
